Spring is here. So, I thought we could go over a few items that came up in my family and how they can impact you and your insurance needs.
My sister and I purchased a house together a few years ago now, and as the weather improves, I will be trying to address a few maintenance issues, as well as trying to get the yard the way I want it, which is a continuing project. I may need to have a contractor come to give an estimate! Some siding on my home needs repair and I would not feel comfortable performing the repair myself. I have also noticed a few spots around my home where the paint may need to be either touched up or just repainted. Insurance companies do want to see that a home is being cared for and maintained. If a property is not properly cared for, a company may elect to non-renew a policy, so if you have a home repair that you are aware of and have been waiting to perform, now may be a good time.
My sister also recently got engaged, and my future brother-in-law and his twin girls are now living in our house. The twins recently had a birthday, and we had quite a few guests over to celebrate, but we did have a very scary moment. As the weather was cold and we wanted guests to be comfortable outside, my sister purchased an outdoor propane heater. While my brother was manning a smoker and her father was setting up other items outside, one of the twins got too close to the propane heater while wearing a loose-fitting dress, which promptly caught fire! Luckily her father and my brother were close by and managed to take the dress off, but they all managed to suffer burns. Luckily, all of this was contained quickly. Let this serve as a reminder that everyone in your home should practice proper fire safety, be aware of their surroundings and maybe don’t stand quite so close to open flames!
We have had a few calls from our customers related to coverage for hail on their auto insurance related to some recent weather warnings. Coverage for Hail damage would be provided if you have purchased Comprehensive (sometimes referred to as Other than Collision) coverage, and your deductible would apply. That being said, you should purchase this coverage before a weather event is imminent as we will be unable to bind coverage at that time.
